24. OCEAN BEACH
The natural beauty of San Francisco’s location is highlighted on this waterfront walk along the edge of the Pacific Ocean.
DIFFICULTY: MODERATE
Begin at the end of Point Lobos Avenue (via bus #18 or 38), near the entrance to Sutro Heights Park (1). Once the site of the home and gardens of Mayor Adolph Sutro, today it’s a lovely 18-acre hilltop park. Head in the main entrance and tour the grounds, savoring the ocean views from its westernmost point. Check out the historic plaques to see its former grandeur. Return to Point Lobos Avenue, looping downhill to the Cliff House (2; 1090 Lobos). The building rewards visitors with glorious views from its perch on the city’s edge and houses two stylish restaurants. The upscale Sutro’s restaurant and adjoining bar offer north-facing views from soaring floor-to-ceiling windows, and the light-filled Bistro looks out over Ocean Beach (which extends almost 5 miles south) and the Pacific fading into the horizon. Continue along the waterfront esplanade to the Dutch Windmill (3), which sits on the edge of Golden Gate Park. The windmill was built in 1902 to supply much-needed water for the western side of the park. Just beyond the windmill to the left is the small, pretty Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden (4). Continue south to the Beach Chalet (5; 1000 Great Highway). The murals on the ground floor were sponsored by the federal Works Progress Administration in 1936. Interesting displays show what the area looked like before the Sunset District was developed (it used to consist of miles of windswept sand dunes). The restaurant upstairs has fine ocean views, or head to the Park Chalet in the rear of the building for one of the beers brewed on site. Return to the beach and head south. Then turn inland at Judah, two blocks south of the park. Warm up at the friendly Java Beach Café (6; 1396 La Playa) or local favorite The Outerlands (7; 4001 Judah) before catching the N train.
